The qualities of the SIP radial brake caliper are unsurpassed and documented in videos,article descriptions and tests:one-piece “monobloc construction”,forged material and a load capacity increased by a factor of ten.
These are some of the key words in the resume of the 5644 Brake Calliper.
The “Disc Brake RADIAL Classic Look” kit combines the SIP Brake Calliper and its “SIP Axle Seating” bracket with the components of the Grimeca NT to create a complete front disc brake.
Mounted on the vehicle,the result is the familiar classic look with the “Brake Drum” on the left-hand side of the vehicle - and modern radial brake technology when viewed from the engine side.
Existing ring rims - whether Plate or tubeless - can continue to be used.
The surface of the drum-like Wheel Hub is optionally available with or without net-shaped Spokes.
Unlike the classic Grimeca complete kits,the radial Disc Brakes do not include semi-hydraulic master cylinders.
Instead,the additional purchase of a Brake Master Cylinder or brake pump is required.
We recommend the original Piaggio master cylinder pumps,which are approved for road use as standard due to their use in the PX98/MY Vespas.
Alternatively,SIP offers a brake pump CNC-milled in Germany,known from the custom scooter “Glorious Basterd”:It impresses with the same proven inner workings,but with a significantly higher-quality appearance and material quality.
The ultimate choice for many classic car riders:the compact Crimaz brake pumps (item no.
56375600),based on the master cylinders of the Piaggio TPH.
They are so small that they are almost invisible under the Handlebar - ideal for anyone who wants to retain the classic vintage look.
There are two alternatives for the Brake Hose:Either buy a Spiegler hose - available in many suitable lengths and colors,with easy installation and an enclosed TUV Approval.
Or use the SIP Brake Hose Kit,whose Braided Steel Hose (Stahlflex) can be cut to any length,but is fitted “at your own Cap”.
As has long been the case with Grimeca components,there is currently no longer a valid TUV Approval.
Although the historical parts certificate is still available for download and the parts are so well established that many inspectors accept them without any problems,there is still a residual risk unless individual agreement has been reached with the relevant inspection body in advance.
For the SIP components Brake Calliper 5644 and Axle Seating 39072,a current Parts Type Approval (TTG) is included.
The TTG corresponds to the former German “Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis” (ABE).
This means that all classic Vespas with standard Disc Brakes,such as the “PX 98” or “Millennium” models,have the right to be retrofitted with the SIP radial brake caliper.
Older Vespas also benefit from the TTG - it proves that the brake components can demonstrably withstand the characteristic loads of a Vespa.
As a result,individual approval is usually possible without any problems.
Disc Brakes can be fitted to classic cars by installing a PK-based SIP Conversion Steering Column.

Unfortunately,there is recurring customer feedback that the studs of the “Brake Drum GRIMECA” turn when the wheel nuts are tightened - i.e.
they turn out on the back of the drum.
If they are not screwed in correctly,the studs may collide with parts of the brake.
GRIMECA studs can be secured in advance using the SIP stud screwing tool and high-strength Thread Locker.
The SIP Stud Kits are even better:They are available in three lengths so that there is always enough free thread length available - even with aluminum rims,wide tires and wheel spacers.
An industrial screw locking agent is already applied,and installation is easy with a hexagon socket.
